Choose how to start your first well

A template is a ready-made well to change into yours; you give it its name next. Or start from blank tables, or upload an Excel or JSON file.

Checks

Where the drawing could be read wrongly. The labels always give the real depths; dismiss what you mean to draw like this.

Text note

Enter starts a new line. Ctrl+Enter saves, Esc cancels.

Font of the drawing

Csg 9 5/8" 47# P110 @ 1,800 m

Labels, notes and tables take all of these (a size set for one table in config.tables still wins for it).

Label

Changes show on the drawing straight away. Default puts a colour back to the usual one.

Line

px

Changes show on the drawing straight away. New shapes of this kind start with the style you apply.

Table

The first row is the column names. Cells copied from Excel can be pasted into any cell. Empty rows are left out.

Help

wellsch draws a well's casing schematic - casings and liners, cement, plugs, perforations, open hole, the downhole string and the surface equipment, vertical or deviated - from the well's data, on an A4 page ready to print. Everything about a well is kept in one file (its JSON): the data, and how you arranged the drawing. Every change is saved straight away: there is no Save button for the drawing.

1. Your first well, step by step

  1. Click Open → tab Templates → Blank well (empty tables), or a template such as Vertical to start from a ready-made well. Type the well's name (for example DEMO-1) and confirm.
  2. The Well data window opens. In the Well tab, set the depth unit (m or ft), the total depth (TD) and, if you have it, the PBTD.
  3. In Casings, type one row per casing or liner, from the biggest to the smallest: name, OD, top, shoe, cement top.
  4. If the well is deviated, describe its path in Deviation. A vertical well needs nothing there.
  5. Add Plugs, Perforations and Open holes if the well has them.
  6. In Downhole equipment, type the string from the top down: the first Top MD, then each item's Length.
  7. In Surface equipment, list the wellhead, the tree, the valves.
  8. Click Save (or press Ctrl+Enter). If something is wrong, the window says where (sheet, row, column): fix it and save again.
  9. The drawing appears. Drag labels, shoes or tables to make it clear; add notes, shapes, pictures or tables with the tools on the left.
  10. Click Export PDF to print, and Download JSON to keep a copy of the complete well.

Well nameDEMO-1The name shown on the drawing.
Depth unitmm or ft: the unit of every depth.
Total depth (TD)2510The bottom of the hole: at or below the deepest shoe.
PBTD2490Plug-back total depth: the deepest point inside the last string (below its top, at or above its shoe). With TD, the bottom of the well is drawn cemented from PBTD to TD.

Below, Well info holds any facts about the well as Item | Value pairs - field, rig, coordinates, elevations, dates - listed in the Well info table of the drawing in the same order. Example: Field | Hassi R'Mel, Rig | ENF-12, Ground level | 742.1 m.

6. Casings

One row per casing or liner. The order of the rows is the order of the Casing program table on the drawing (usually the biggest first).

7. Deviation (the well's path)

A vertical well needs nothing here. A deviated one needs one row per casing that deviates: its type and its KOP MD - the depth where it starts changing direction. That is all: the bends are drawn for you. Every string inside it follows it, down to its own shoe.

TypeWhat is drawnAngle if left empty
s_deviationfrom the KOP it builds to its angle, comes back to vertical, then goes straight down20°
j_build_holdthe usual directional well: from the KOP it builds to its angle and holds it to its shoe30°
sidetrackit leaves the casing it is in at the KOP - through that casing (a whipstock and plug are drawn), or below its shoe - builds to its angle and holds it30°
horizontalfrom the KOP it builds to 90° and runs flat to its shoealways 90°

A casing that deviates more than once - a sidetrack that then lands horizontal, an S near the top and a horizontal deeper - has one row per deviation, from the top down. Each starts from where the previous one left the string (holding its angle in between), after that one's bend has finished; a sidetrack can only be the first. Each gets its own KOP label.

Optional: Angle, Deviation length (for a J, a sidetrack or a horizontal: the length of its bend, from the KOP to its angle - for example where a horizontal lands; empty, the app picks a smooth one), Direction (left unless you write right), KOP label (a name for its KOP label) and S name (an S deviation's note). Example - two S deviations, and a liner that is a sidetrack landing horizontal:

CasingTypeKOP MDAngle (°)Direction
Csg 13 3/8"s_deviation200
Csg 7"s_deviation180015right
Liner 7"sidetrack2050
Liner 7"horizontal2400
Liner 4 1/2"horizontal1900

Unless you give a Deviation length, the lengths of the bends are the app's own: on a schematic only where and how the well deviates matters. Only KOPs are labelled. A row of type custom is a path given in detail in the JSON: kept as it is, unless you choose another type. Excel files from before keep working.

8. Plugs

Plugs set inside a casing: a cement plug has a top and a bottom; a bridge plug has one depth (in Top MD).

9. Perforations

Intervals shot through a casing to let the reservoir in. SPF (shots per foot) and Date are optional.

Liner 7"Zone A2380242062023-04-22

10. Open holes

Hole with no pipe in it, drilled on from at or below a shoe. Size is the bit size in inches.

NameSize (in)Top MDBottom MD
Open hole 6"625002650

11. Downhole equipment

The string run in the well, top to bottom in running order. Types: tubing, tubing_hanger, packer, nipple, ssd (sliding sleeve), safety_valve, seal_assembly, crossover, side_pocket_mandrel (drawn with three white dots), flow_coupling (like a crossover, its upper part longer), millout_extension, and other for any other piece (a pump...): give its real name in Name.

A string inside another (e.g. 2-7/8" run inside 4-1/2"): list the outer string first, then the inner string with its own accessories, each with its own Top MD. Rows lying entirely within the outer tubing's depths, with a smaller OD, are drawn as the inner string, so they don't count as overlapping it.

Give the first row's Top MD and every row's Length. Each next top is calculated - the bottom of the row above - and shown greyed out; each Bottom MD too (Top + Length).

16. Checks

Checks (with a number when there are some) lists the places where the drawing could mislead about the real well - for example a shoe dragged above a shallower one, or equipment drawn outside the casing it is really in. They are never errors: Show highlights the place, Dismiss marks it as meant to be like that, until the real data changes.

17. JSON

JSON opens the well's file beside the drawing, for those who prefer to edit it directly: change it, then click Render schematic (or Ctrl+Enter) to draw and save it. Its format is described at /schema.json, so other programs (a database export, an AI) can produce wells too.

18. Keep, share and print

19. Your account

The app works without an account, but then your wells are kept for this browser only. Create account (or Sign in) to find them wherever you sign in; the wells you made before are offered to be moved into it.
